Interesting times indeed in hooves-land! I've been stuck in the 11-13 PED black hole for a few weeks now and have had my share of frustration with my pathetic attempts to get anywhere in intermediate...and I've finally realized that I'm approaching the game in the wrong way!
Old approach - try and increase PED as quickly as possible by restricting breeding to higher PED horses only. Problem was, finding 25 mill for my next step up is nigh impossible given poor stud demand, slow level progression and rare cup wins (I have a "thing" about never selling my horsies so selling revenue isn't an option)...so my stable dwindled as I waited to drop all my cash on the next big breeding. Also, focusing breeding on the highest star studs in a category has resulted in some very poor performers.
So, new approach - breed to race! I'm back to breeding frequently among my own stock to keep my numbers up, and I happily use outside stallions within my current PED or even below, because my goal is to find the horses with the best performance. If my guys are 12's forever who cares, if they can beat the pants off the competition! Should make things fun again!
A thought on room restrictions - I'd say there should be an upper PED limit in all the rooms, but not a lower as that would make life really difficult for those straddling the cut-off. Seems to me lower horses should be welcome to try their luck with the higher horses and maybe get that long-shot win, BUT only if the program is tweaked so that chances of winning much more accurately reflect horse quality. I assume there's some sort of formula that decides the winner so I think it just needs to be revisited...surely that wouldn't be a difficult thing to do?
So, off to see what my newest low-PED baby looks like!
